Disney Could Hit a Record at the Global Box Office This year
According to Comscore data, Disney is on track to hit a record $9 billion at the global box office in 2019.
The company has already earned $1.6 billion in North America through the month of May and $4 billion worldwide.
Considering that “The Lion King,” “Toy Story 4,” “Frozen 2” and “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” are all due out later this year, it could be one epic year of money at the box office for the company.
Disney has continuously smashed its own records in recent years. In 2018, Disney hit $7.3 billion, with $3.09 billion domestically.
“I would say they should finish pretty substantially above where they finished last year,” Doug Creutz, analyst at
Cowen, remarked. ”… I think it’s going to be above eight [billion dollars], it might be above nine.”
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger recently spoke to Barrons about its new streaming service and said, “We’re not launching Disney+ to catch up to Netflix or even compete with them. The marketplace is hungry for this, and we have a brand people know and love.”
“Disney+ will have Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, National Geographic, and more. There will be originals, a library of past movies, and recent releases like “Avengers: Endgame.” We believe there is a voracious appetite for what we make, and to deliver it over the top.”
