Former Starbucks Chairman’s Potential Presidential Running Has Baffled Some People
Howard Schultz, the former chairman of Starbucks, is considering a presidential bid for 2020 and it has some people pretty steamed.
Not because Schultz may not be a good running for the presidency, but because he’s considering to run as an “Independent” and not a “Democrat.”
Schultz told “60 Minutes” over the weekend that he’s considering running as an independent. Those who are supporting this move are President Obama’s former adviser David Axelrod and The Democratic Party chairwoman in Washington State, Tina Podlodowski.
“For somebody who is professing to be a lifelong Democrat, I think to be running as in independent in this particular cycle is not a wise thing to do,” Podlodowski explained.
Julian Castro, the former secretary of Housing and Urban Development also announced a bid for the Democratic nomination and said on CNN that he is concerned if Schultz did run an independent campaign “it would provide Donald Trump with his best hope of getting re-elected.”
Schultz has been a longtime Democratic donor and even contributed to the campaigns of former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
CNBC’s Jim Cramer weighed in on this news and said that Schultz’s best chance at winning would be as the Democratic nominee. He said, “I know he says he doesn’t want to be a Democrat but how about if he got it by acclamation,” which would be kind of like the side door. Therefore, he wouldn’t have to go through the slings and arrows of the primaries.”
Trump also weighed in on Schultz comments about running for president and said that he “doesn’t have the ‘guts’ to run for President!”
