Uber is Testing an “On-demand Labor” Service

Dubbed Uber Works, ride hailing company Uber is testing an “on-demand labor” service that would expand it out of just the transportation arena.

According to a source familiar with the pilot program who spoke to CNBC, the service is aimed at people who are not currently drivers with Uber.

The Financial Times first reported the Uber Works pilot. The program is being tested in Chicago and would offer on-demand staffing for events and corporate functions, according to the source. The source remains unidentified as they are not authorized to speak about the pilot.

Uber also recently announced a new division of Uber Freight, its trucking division, called Powerloop. Uber Freight helps match truckers to companies that have goods that need to be moved and Powerloop is a service that will rent physical equipment to drivers in need for a daily fee.

Uber is gearing up for its highly anticipated IPO next year.
