Samsung’s Galaxy X7 Active Isn’t “Water-resistant”

Samsung’s popular commercial featuring Lil Wayne pouring Champagne on his Galaxy s7 may get some major backlash.

The company’s Active version of the S7, which is available to AT&T customers for $800 and up, is being marketed as equally water-resistant.

Consumer reports recently evaluated the Active to see if it was indeed water-resistant, and it failed the test.

In the test, Consumer Reports technicians placed a Galaxy S7 Active in a water tank pressurized to 2.12 pounds-per-square-inch, the equivalent of just under five feet of water, and set a timer for 30 minutes.

After the phone was removed, notonly was the touchscreen not responsive, but screen was obscured by green lines, and tiny bubbles were visible in the lenses of the front- and rear-facing cameras.

Consumer Reports then did the same test again with the Active and that test also failed. The phones never returned to functionality.

According to Samsung, the company received “very few complaints” about this issue, and that in all cases, the phones were covered under warranty.

The standard Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are also water-resistant and both models passed.
