According the coroner who investigated pop singer George Michael’s surprising death at 53, the cause was natural.

Senior coroner for Oxfordshire, Darren Salter, said the singer’s cause of death was due to a dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver. Michael had passed away peacfully in his home on Christmas.

A statement from the coroner reads, “Enquires into the death of George Michael have been concluded and the final post mortem report received. As there is a confirmed natural cause of death, being Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Myocarditis and Fatty Liver, the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further enquiries.

No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy.”

The Mayo Clinic says that dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart, when the left ventricle stretches and fails to effectively pump blood. It can lead to heart failure. Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart usually that is caused by a viral infection.

When fat in the liver builds up, it is called fatty liver disease. Although it can be commonly caused by alcoholism, it can happen to people who aren’t heavy drinkers too.

Michael’s boyfriend Fadi Fawaz posted a picture of him and Michael onto his Twitter shortly after the results were out and captioned it, “The Truth is out…”

Thames Valley Police also commented on Michael’s death shortly after and said they were completing the related investigation.

“The investigation into the circumstances of the death has now concluded and a file was passed to the Coroner. As the cause of death was natural, no further action is proposed or required,” authorities wrote on Facebook. “No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy.”
