It only took six nominations, but Denzel Washington finally went home with a SAG Award as Best Actor for his role in Fences.

The 62-year old star was so surprised that he won, that he didn’t even have a speech when he went to accept the award.

Fortunately he winged it and gave a pretty good speech, giving a lot of credit to the people who don’t get attention like celebrities. His last words were “Viola Davis,” who starred with him in Fences.

“Casey [Affleck] has been winning everything so I assumed… I actually prepared a speech in case we won best ensemble, so I said I better be ready just in case because, I knew I had to speak for the cast,” Washington said. “As the night was going along, I got a feeling. I said, ‘Boy, you better start thinking of some things just in case.'”

On why he said Viola Davis’ name at the end of his speech, he commeted backstage to ET, “She’s a brilliant, brilliant actor and it’s her turn. The actor has met the role now and she deserves everything she’s getting, absolutely.”

Washington is also nominated for Best Actor at next month’s Oscars. He is the most nominated African-American actor in the history of the awards show.
