Google Has Ended its Ad Ban of Cryptocurrency.. Kind of

Google is reversing part of a decision it made to ban cryptocurrency-related advertising and is now going to allow regulated crypto exchanges to buy ads in the United States and Japan.

The move comes after social media giant Facebook began to allow some types of cryptocurrency-related advertising back on its platform this past June. Google’s new policy will start in October.

It was in March that Google had announced its original restrictions which were rolled out in June.

“We don’t have a crystal ball to know where the future is going to go with cryptocurrencies, but we’ve seen enough consumer harm or potential for consumer harm that it’s an area that we want to approach with extreme caution,” Google’s Scott Spencer told CNBC when the original restrictions were passed.

While the company’s new policy applies to advertisers all over the world, ads can only run in the U.S. and Japan and interested parties will need to apply for certification to serve ads in each country individually.
