A group of black freshman students at the University of Pennsylvania, were added to a messaging group by an Oklahoma-based GroupMe account, that attacked them with racial slurs.

The university released a statement calling the slurs, “violent, racist and thoroughly disgusting images and messages.”

According to the statement, both police and university staff are trying to locate the source and determine if they can block the account and take “every step possible” to support the affected students.

“The racism of this GroupMe message is profoundly inimical to what we stand for as a university,” the statement said. “We will take every step possible to counteract its appalling bias.”
