A gunman opened fire at a Fort Lauderdale airport on Friday, killing five people and injuring at least eight.

According to Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca, Esteban Santiago, 26, checked the gun into his luggage and loaded it in a bathroom after retrieving it at baggage claim.

Wearing a Star-Wars T and carrying a military ID, he started shooting at the Hollywood International Airport.

Witnesses said that after he ran out of ammunition, he went down to the floor and layed “spread-eagle” until police apprehended him.

Police documents have revealed that Santiago was born in New Jersey in 1990 but had been living in Alaska. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the suspect was taken into custody and is being interrogated by FBI agents and sheriff’s deputies.

According to Santiago’s family, he had severe mental issues. “Only thing I could tell you was when he came out of Iraq, he wasn’t feeling too good,” his uncle, Hernan Rivera, told The Record newspaper. Santiago had been deployed in 2010 as part of the Puerto Rico National Guard, spending a year with an engineering battalion, according to Guard spokesman Maj. Paul Dahlen.
